Nether Largie Standing Stones

Nether Largie Standing Stones, Kilmartin Glen, Scotland, October 10, 2015

View over the full monument

This unusual collection of stones is part of a larger complex of ritual sites and tombs dating from the Late Neolithic through the Early Bronze Age which stretch the length of Kilmartin Glen. This structure, unlike the more familiar rings, is configured as two sets of offset paired stones at opposite ends with a central upright and a low “ring” of stones beside it. The remnants of two outlier stones have been discovered east and west of the monument. Three of the stones bear decorations. In trying to discover its purpose, some researchers have detected lunar and solar alignments within the monument.

This is the first stop in a walking tour of several other sites within the immediate area which are all easily accessible on foot and ends, happily, at a very nice tea shop and museum (recommended to me by a kind gentleman out picking blackberries). I was lucky to have the weather on my side this day and visited all of them, and highly recommend them to anyone with the chance to visit all.
